On Friday March 1, we attended a workshop ran by Dr. Rosalind Silverman from the University of Toronto.
The workshop was titled 'How to master a medical and dental school interview' and the goal was to help students be more successful as they follow their dream of becoming a doctor.
Dr. Silverman invited Saint James to speak about the growing importance of off-shore medical schools.
The key challenge for students in Canada (and also in the USA) is the limited spaces available in medical schools, for example the University of Toronto has over 2000 applications for only 200 places. This means many excellent students who would become fine doctors miss out.
Schools like Saint James provide a vital alternative option.
Attending Saint James also allows Canadian students to work in the USA which is important as it provides greater professional opportunities.
Here is a quick summary of the questions the group asked:
Q: How many intakes do you have each year?
A: 3
Q: Do students require MCAT?
A: No
Q: Where do Saint James students do their clinical rotations?
A: Chicago
Q: Do you help students prepare for USMLEs
A: Yes
Q: What is the island life like?
A: Very relaxed, warm and fun…but there is a lot of work and study to do!
We would like to thank Dr. Silverman for the invitation and the students for their interest; we wish you the very best as you follow your dream.
