At the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Saint James School of Medicine school, we are truly thankful to have such a bright and vibrant student body. Our students come from across the globe in the pursuit of a quality, affordable medical education and have the drive and charisma to exceed even their own expectations. Before our 2014 incoming classes began their first day of courses, we sat down with a number of them to get a gauge of their thoughts, feelings and goals regarding the next big step in their educational path. Today, meet Victoria Cordero!
What inspired you to become a physician?
Throughout life I considered many different careers. I thought about becoming both a teacher and a psychiatrist among many others, but ultimately a career in medicine beautifully combined every career I could have ever considered into one.
Why did you choose Saint James School of Medicine?
The application process was very easy and unpressured. It was the first time I felt like I was a great student capable of making it through a good program. Studying on such a beautiful island such as St. Vincent is a plus too!
What influenced your decision on which school to attend?
I liked the idea of being at a newly built school. It was also an opportunity to share a part in something’s beginning.
How are you feeling in these last few weeks before you start?
Extremely anxious and nervous yet excited at the same time! You’re moving to a new place, that’s in a new area for almost everyone involved. There are so many things that run through your mind and it’s hard to set expectations.
Do you have any tips for future incoming students who will soon be in your situation?
Use the resources around you, especially the people the school has put you in contact with; they’re a great help. Other than that, just enjoy the ride!
What are you looking forward to in your first semester?
The first semester marks the beginning of something great. We’re all on this amazing path so I look forward to meeting and getting to know new people to embark on this journey with.
Anything else you’d like to add?
We’re all moving away from home with the same goals in mind. Remember to be open-minded and just smile… we’re family now!
