Prosthetic limbs have always had a presence in mankind's history of medicine, starting with the Ancient Egyptians building wooden toes to present day, where robotic prosthetics have now crept toward center stage. Unlike its wooden, leather and iron ancestors, bionic body parts allow for natural movement, with joints, individual digits, extensions, and much more.
As the head of the MIT Media Lab's Biomehatronics group, Hugh Herr brings the latest in this medical breakthrough. Ballroom dancer Adrianna Haslet-Davis, who lost her left leg in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, helps illustrate just how far engineers, scientists and researchers have truly come as she performs again for the first time while using her replacement leg.
