Spinal fusion is a surgical procedure that is performed on the spine in order to weld two or more vertebrae together using hardware and bone graft material. Surgical fusion is designed to eliminate movement between the affected vertebrae in order to make the spine more stable and decrease any pain.
The human spine consists of a series of interconnected bones called vertebrae extending from the base of the skull to the tailbone. In between each vertebrae lies a disk. The disks and vertebrae work together to support the twists of the back and the neck. However, things do not always go as planned, which is where spinal fusion comes in.
Spinal fusion would be recommended for people who have broken vertebrae, excessive vertebrae, osteoarthritis, scoliosis or a bulging disc. In order to learn more about spinal fusion, click here!
