Over the summer, the American Medical School Association (AMSA) chapter on the Bonaire campus brought in prestigious speakers from the MD Anderson Cancer Center. The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has a mission to "eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public." Through core values of caring, integrity and discovery, the MD Anderson Cancer Center hopes to be the premier cancer center in the world as they "make cancer history."
On June 4th, the Bonaire AMSA chapter hosted a seminar where they brought in three key speakers to share their prominent research and esteemed clinical work. All three of the speakers are faculty members at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. Throughout the series of lectures, each doctor focused in on a core topic which offered new perspectives throughout the duration of the seminar.
Dr. Diana Bell, Assistant Professor of the Department of Pathology, gave an informative lecture entitled: Salivary Gland Tumors: Classification, Molecular Insights and Biomarkers. Dr. Annikka Weissferdt gave the second lecture entitled: Introduction to Pulmonary and Mediastinal Pathology. For the third insightful presentation, Dr. Achim Bell gave a lecture called: Genomics and it's Impact in Medicine.
The seminar was a huge success, both with the doctors and the students here at SJSM. While all three of the doctors hope to return to another SJSM seminar next year, we can't wait to see all of the other upcoming AMSA events that will be taking place this semester!
