According to data recently released from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the number of students enrolling in medical school this year is at an all time high of 20,630 students. The total number of applicants grew by 6.2% to 52,550 while the number of first-time applicants increased by 4.8%. The male-to-female ratio remained the same as the previous year with a ratio of 52 percent to 48 percent. According to the U.S. News Data, out of the top 10 most competitive medical schools in the country, the average acceptance rate last year was 2.7%. The average acceptance rate out of all 117 ranked medical schools in the U.S. was still competitive, at 7.1%. The medical school with the highest acceptance rate this past year was Oklahoma State University with an acceptance rate of 19.8%. In order to get in to any of the registered U.S. medical schools, a strong interview, outstanding MCAT, high GPA, and a lot of luck are required. In a field that is so competitive, these medical schools rely heavily on the applicants MCAT score as part of their admissions decisions in order to cut the pool. The MCAT is a 7 and a 1/2 hour-long event that is divided into four different sections. While the MCAT is a financial and academic burden for many, it can be disheartening to know the low acceptance rate of U.S. medical schools. Fortunately there are other options out there to help you accomplish your dream of becoming a doctor. Caribbean medical schools, like Saint James School of Medicine, are a wonderful alternative to medical schools in the states. Doctors-of-Tomorrow-Board-Leaders1 SJSM thrives off of providing a quality, medical education with less barriers required to reaching your goal. With a field that is highly competitive, SJSM is improving its Anguilla campus and expanding the St. Vincent campus to accommodate a larger student body. SJSM also does not require the MCAT! Instead, applying is easy with a three-step process that is guided with helpful admissions advisors. While expensive tuition costs can be a burden on many med school applicants, SJSM provides a low cost tuition rate in order to help every student succeed. It is Saint James' mission to offer an accessible medical education. By keeping our fees as affordable as possible, we are one of the lowest priced Caribbean medical schools. If you are interested in applying, please complete our online application form; it only takes five minutes! One of our admissions advisors will get in touch and guide you through the rest of the application process.
