Imagine taking a medicine that hasn't been proven safe for you but is on drug store shelves everywhere. Sounds ridiculous right? Well, this might actually be the case for females when it comes to prescription medication.
According to Emergency Medicine Doctor Alyson McGregor, since the beginning of medical research, studies have mainly been conducted on male participants. By only testing new drugs on half the population, pharmaceutical companies are putting the other half, women, at risk. A lot of the time, the biological effects of a medication on females aren't discovered until the drug has already been released to the public.
In her Ted talk, McGregor talks about why this came to be and how it effects women's healthcare. If we don't do something to change the way medical research is conducted, we may be causing more harm than help.
