Dr. Ellsworth Wareham is celebrating his 102nd birthday on October 3rd, and wants you to know the secret to his long life. According to Wareham, a plant-based diet is all you need.
"I don't have any trouble with my joints, my hands are steady, my balance is good, I don't have to walk with a cane," Wareham said to Full Frame's Sandra Hughes.
The former heart surgeon adopted a vegan diet over 50 years ago. Today, Wareham walks regularly, gardens and still drives his car. He also credits his sharp mental faculties to the lifestyle.
"If you gave me something to memorize, I would memorize it just as quickly now as I would when I was 20," Wareham added.
Wareham retired from performing heart surgeries only five years ago at the age of 95. Now he wants to focus on spreading awareness on heart health.
"If your blood cholesterol is under 150, your chances of having a heart attack are pretty small," he said, "Now my blood cholesterol is 117. There's no chance of me having a heart attack."
