From International to Impactful: What It Really Takes to Thrive as an IMG

For many aspiring doctors around the world, the path to becoming a practicing physician in the United States is rarely simple or straightforward. It is often shaped by determination, sacrifice and the unwavering belief that caring for patients can cross any border. This is the story of so many international medical graduates (IMGs), and it is a story that Saint James School of Medicine proudly supports every day.

More than a quarter of practicing physicians in the United States are IMGs. They are family doctors, hospitalists, specialists, educators, and leaders. They work in busy urban hospitals, community clinics, underserved rural areas, and everywhere in between. Their journeys prove one thing: medicine does not just reward intelligence, it rewards resilience.

At SJSM, we know the IMG journey firsthand because we help shape it. Many of our students come from different parts of the world with one goal in mind — to become doctors who can make an impact wherever they go. They bring with them unique experiences and perspectives that enrich every classroom, clinical rotation, and residency match.

The path is not without challenges. Moving to a new country. Adapting to a new health system. Passing rigorous licensing exams. Competing for residency slots that can be more limited for international grads. These obstacles can feel overwhelming, but they are not impossible to overcome. They require careful planning, the right support, and an understanding that your medical education is just the foundation for everything that comes next.

One lesson many successful IMGs share is the importance of staying adaptable. Some start their journey in one specialty but find their passion in another. Some study in one country and train in another. Some build expertise through research, volunteering, or community service that sets them apart when applying for residency. Each step, even if unexpected, can become an advantage.

What makes this journey worthwhile is the impact IMGs make on patient care. Many bring deep cultural sensitivity to diverse patient populations. Some speak multiple languages, bridging gaps for communities who might otherwise struggle to access care. Many IMGs choose to practice in areas with the greatest need for doctors, helping to address real shortages in the healthcare system.

One inspiring example of this dedication is Dr. Paryus Patel. His story reminds us that an IMG’s success is not defined by where they start but by how far they are willing to go. Born and raised in Africa, Dr. Patel moved to India to complete his medical degree, trained further in the UK, and eventually relocated to the United States to continue his career. Along the way, he faced licensing hurdles, adapted to different healthcare systems, and built his credibility through research and real-world clinical experience. Today, he oversees more than 50 hospitals and hundreds of residency slots, proving that an IMG can thrive in the US system and help lead it forward.

Dr. Patel recently shared his story, insights, and practical advice for students in our Med School Minutes conversation. If you are an IMG or plan to become one, his journey is a reminder that success is possible for those who stay curious and committed. Listen to his full conversation here on YouTube or Spotify.

What lessons can future IMGs take from journeys like his? First, remember that every experience counts. If you are volunteering in your community, conducting research or building skills beyond the classroom, you are adding valuable depth to your CV. Residency program directors look for candidates who show they can thrive in real-world settings and bring something unique to their teams.

Second, surround yourself with strong support. Choose a medical school that understands the IMG journey and will guide you through every milestone, from passing your basic sciences to navigating clinical rotations to preparing for licensing exams. At SJSM, we do this through small class sizes, supportive faculty, flexible programs and an emphasis on real clinical experience. We know our students by name and take pride in helping them achieve their goals.

Third, stay confident in your purpose. It can be discouraging when you see statistics about residency match rates for IMGs or hear how competitive the process can be. The truth is, thousands succeed every year because they are prepared, strategic and committed to patient care. If you stay focused, build your knowledge and demonstrate your dedication to serving patients, your effort will stand out.

Finally, do not lose sight of why you started this journey in the first place. Becoming a doctor is about more than a title. It is about using your skills to heal, to educate and to serve. Every patient you care for will benefit from the resilience and perspective you gained as an IMG.

At Saint James School of Medicine, we celebrate these stories because we know they reflect the best of what our students can become. If you are ready to begin your own journey from international to impactful, we are ready to help you every step of the way.
