Safeguarding Your
Medical Future
Your Path to Medicine
Remains Uninterrupted
Recent changes to the Canada Student Financial Assistance Program have restricted out-of-country funding options for Canadian medical students studying abroad. To ensure your journey remains uninterrupted, Saint James School of Medicine (SJSM) has established The 2026 Canadian Student Bridge Grant. This temporary institutional aid fund directly bridges the gap left by the loss of government funding, keeping your out-of-pocket tuition costs manageable.
Because it is a non-repayable grant, it collects no interest and never needs to be paid back — significantly reducing your post-graduation debt.
The 2026
Reservation Window
The 2026 Canadian Student Bridge Grant is deployed as a limited-time institutional relief fund with flexible enrollment terms to protect upcoming cohorts.
Secure Your Grant
Applicants must be accepted and successfully process their institutional seat reservation fee within the 2026 calendar year.
Lock in Your Funding
So long as your seat deposit is secured in 2026, the grant will be fully locked in and guaranteed for your enrollment, even if your matriculation is deferred to a future academic term.
Grant Value &
Financial Structure
The grant provides structured tuition credits tailored to each foundational phase of your medical education at Saint James School of Medicine.
Grant allocations apply strictly to tuition credits and exclude mandatory institutional fees.
| Program Phase | Award Amount (USD) | Duration / Terms |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-Med Program | $1,500 per semester | Applied directly to Pre-Med tuition invoices. |
| Basic Sciences | $3,000 per semester | Applied directly to tuition for up to five (5) consecutive semesters. |
| Clinical Sciences | $2,000 per semester | Applied directly to tuition for up to five (5) consecutive semesters. |
Criteria &
Institutional Terms
To be awarded the grant, applicants must satisfy the following baseline entry requirements:
- Residency: Must be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
- Student Status: Available exclusively to new, incoming Basic Science and Pre-Medical Students (new matriculants to our 4-Year or 5-Year program). Transfer students, or students who currently receive Canadian government funding, are not eligible.
- Enrollment Timeline: Must be accepted for the 2026/2027 academic year (September 2026–August 2027) with a reserved seat confirmed via a deposit processed between January 1, 2026, and December 31, 2026.
- Age: Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of matriculation.
- Exclusivity: Tuition credits apply strictly to full-time students. This grant cannot be combined with other high-tier institutional awards (such as the Dr. Jay K. Pandit or Dr. Bruce Davidson scholarships); if you qualify for multiple, you will automatically receive the single award of the highest monetary value.
- Housing Requirement: To optimize campus community engagement and operational efficiency, grant recipients may be required to reside in official SJSM student housing during both their Basic Sciences and Pre-Medical (if applicable) terms, subject to local availability.
Maintaining the Grant
To ensure subsidized funding supports students on a highly successful path to residency matching, continuation of the grant semester-to-semester is subject to strict academic and professional milestones:
Academic Performance
Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 throughout the program.
Exam Milestones
Sit for and pass all institutional block exams and NBME CAS exams on the first attempt.
Housing Compliance
Fulfill the requirement to continuously reside in official SJSM student housing during all semesters where housing is available (if required to utilize it). Failure to utilize available institutional housing results in immediate forfeiture.
Good Standing
Maintain good academic, behavioral, and financial standing with the School.
⚠️ Probation & Revocation: If you fail to meet the maintenance criteria, you will be placed on financial aid probation for exactly one semester. Failure to restore the required criteria during this period results in permanent revocation. Formal disciplinary action resulting in a "responsible" finding by the Disciplinary Committee terminates the grant instantly.
Furthermore, if Canadian government policy is reverted and public funding resumes, or if you are approved for funding by your provincial financial aid agency, you will no longer be eligible, and issued awards under this bridge program will be revoked.
How to Apply
Eligible Canadian applicants must submit their completed funding portfolio to the Financial Aid Office prior to their term's end of the 2nd week of class. Your application portfolio must consist of:
