Combined Concentration:
Tropical Medicine
and Global Health

Where Global Health Meets Tropical Medicine

The Combined Academic Concentration in Tropical Medicine and Global Health is the most comprehensive international concentration offered at Saint James School of Medicine. It is designed for students who want the broadest clinical exposure, the strongest global perspective, and a deeper understanding of how medicine is practiced across different health systems and disease environments.

This concentration brings together the defining strengths of both the Tropical Medicine and Global Health pathways into one unified academic track. Students complete advanced international clinical experiences across multiple settings, while also building focused knowledge in infectious and tropical disease through formal PAHO coursework.

For students who want to graduate with the most expansive international training profile available at SJSM, this is the highest-level concentration.

Why This Concentration Matters

The Broadest International Clinical Experience
Students complete training across three distinct international settings, gaining exposure to different patient populations, healthcare systems, and clinical realities.

A Stronger and More Distinctive Residency Profile
This concentration demonstrates unusual breadth, academic initiative, adaptability, and focused experience in both global health and tropical medicine.

Specialized Knowledge Plus Real Clinical Exposure
Students do not simply study international and tropical medicine in theory. They combine formal coursework with direct clinical training in the field.

One Unified Pathway
This combined concentration offers a streamlined structure for students who want to pursue both areas in an integrated way.

A Rare Training Opportunity
Few medical students have the opportunity to graduate with structured international clinical exposure across multiple countries along with formal coursework in travelers’ health and tropical disease.
