SJSCIENCE – ISSUE 38, FALL 2018

Issue No 38. Fall 2018

The role of mindfulness in coping with stress:

A study of Canadians studying medicine at Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

By Tina Smith-Desrosiers and Emily Hurst

Supervisors: Aleksandar Dusic, MD Mirjana Milutinovic MD

Exposed to enormous stress: emotional, cognitive, physical… sometimes burnout under academic pressure… being far from home… medical students are in desperate need for adequate coping with stress. There are some traits that make it easier. Studying those traits is challenging since there are many compounding variables. The SJSM research group reduced the variables by focusing on mindfulness in Canadian students only. Maybe next study, focused on students from other parts of the world, will show the difference?
