  Telomeres are located at the ends of chromosomes. They protect the chromosome from damage. Each time a cell divides, the telomeres become shorter, until they become so short that the cell cannot divide anymore. That is why they play important role in cell division, cancers, and senescence. So, it might make sense to wish a happy birthday to your colleague with: Happy birthday and may your telomeres never get short!
