Human T-Lymphocyte Virus and the Development of Adult T-Cell Leukemia/Lymphoma

Some viruses can take over the bodies of their victims. One of them is HTLV-1. It sneaks into the host’s T-cells and turns host defenders into host enemies. The infection can happen in childhood, and the virus can wait for years before activation—and that, my friends, is how some people end up with adult T-cellleukemia/lymphoma.
SJSM students explored the complex relationship between this viral baddie and the cancer it spawns. They also discussed the latest advancements in research that might help defeat this formidable foe. A summary of the discussion on SJSM Science day can be found in the poster below.
